2008 Clean Calgary Association Rain Barrel Sale a Huge Success!
Clean Calgary Association would like to thank all the volunteers who gave us their time and enthusiasm to make this year’s rain barrel sale the most successful one yet. Many of the volunteers at this event have been coming year after year and watching us grow. This year, Clean Calgary Association added a fourth sale location at the Whitethorn location in the North East of Calgary. We are delighted to announce that we sold a four site total of 1694 barrels in a few short hours! This means an important increase in water conservation in Calgary and a successful fundraiser for Clean Calgary Association programs.

Idle Free Campaign
Calling all artists with an interest in air quality and the environment! Clean Calgary Association is hosting a design contest for a decal that will be part of an Idle Free campaign. We are seeking a creative convincing design that will inspire Calgarians to choose to be idle free. Calgarians who chose to become idle free, thus reducing their transportation-generated carbon dioxide emissions and improving air quality, will be able to display this decal in their car, at work, in school and at home.
Ask Ashley
A Perfect Garbage Bag?
Q:
Dear Ashley,
Assuming that I am already using reusable shopping bags (for groceries and any shopping!), reusing fruit/vegetable bags and recycling as much as possible… What is the best option for garbage bags? I am reusing old/used plastic grocery bags (from someone else). Is there really any advantage to using compostable or bio-degradable plastic bags for the landfill? I didn't think they would break down much in landfills if there is little air or water.
Thanks,
Debbie

Tip of the Month
Green Spring Clean
The main sources of human exposure to toxic chemicals are the areas we once thought were safest: our own homes, offices and cars (Scientific American, Feb. 1998). Try to eliminate chemical based products in you home.
Many companies offer green cleaning options which are usually non-toxic, bio-degradable and phosphate free
You need just a few simple things to make you own cleaning products; vinegar, borax, baking soda and castile soap.
